East Battery Historic Restoration

The restoration project of 29 East Battery is a significant milestone for Charleston, as it helps preserve one of its most iconic buildings for future generations.

Built c. 1856, 29 East Battery is a historic landmark in Charleston. The mansion is a three story, Italian Renaissance Revival style structure, with one square and one semi-circular piazza that overlook the Charleston Harbor. The building’s piazzas and facade had shown signs of wear and tear over the years and were in dire need of repair. Morris Construction was chosen to undertake the project due to their expertise and experience in historic restoration and renovation.

Restoring 29 East Battery was a complex project that involved careful planning and great attention to detail. Morris Construction assembled a team of skilled artisans, craftsmen, and restoration experts who worked together to restore the building’s severely deteriorated facade to its original grandeur. The project involved replacing damaged masonry and woodwork, as well as repairing and repainting of the building’s ornate cornices, balustrades and moldings. The restoration team also created replicas of the Ionic capitals for the columns which are an essential part of the building’s historic character. The urns on the rooftop were restored and reset across the rooftop parapet.
